                                  NO MORE HOT LIPS

I am happy to report that I no longer have a "burning mouth" or "hot lips"  It took about 2 weeks  to get and two trips to the dentist, but everything seems to be back to normal.  It was obviously an allergic reaction to the nutritional supplement I was taking.  I am not on it any more!

I have also modified my food plan somewhat.  I was finding that what I had been instructed to do was much too restrictive.    It is my feeling that if I cannot enjoy my life and that includes  being able to go out to lunch and being able to order off the menu, why bother living?  So far, I've been able to eat sensibly without going overboard.  I plan to continue to do just that.

I am going through my Vegetarian Times magazines to look for interesting recipes, checking out some of my diabetes cookbooks and the South Beach Diet book.  I have found that most of them stress the same things. Eliminate sugar, flour, and all things "white".  That pretty much does away with desserts, but I've found that my sweet tooth has for the most part disappeared.  I do find that if I see a piece of chocolate cake, I start salivating, but I quickly turn to something else.

This weekend I am looking forward to going to a graduation party for my niece and nephew in VA.  I know there's going to be lots of good things to eat, including Kim's yummy spring rolls.  And yes, I will have some.  I get them so seldom so when I have the opportunity I will indulge.  The one thing I don't want to do is become one of those whining people who stand around saying "oh no, I can't eat that".  Just shut up and eat it.  No one wants to hear it.

Just heard on Dr. Oz there are three low carb alternatives to flour; coconut flour for breading, almond flour for cakes, muffins, etc and flax flour for pancakes, waffles etc.  Also a sweet snack with no sugar:  cashew nuts smeared with coconut oil and sprinkled with cinnamon.  Bake for 30 minutes at 35o.  And a chocolate ricotta mousse.  It's all on Dr. Oz's web site.  My next trip to the store will definitely include these flours and some cashews!

I really believe the secret to good health is eliminating junk food, drinking lots of water (no soda), lots of vegetables and fruit and limiting meat.    So far I've lost 15 pounds and hope to lose about 10 more.

Also read something very interesting in one of my diabetic books about lack of sleep contributing to diabetes.  Tomorrow I have an appointment at the sleep clinic.  I am sure that I've had sleep apnea (probably all my life).  I know I've been a terrible snorer and Tom says I stop breathing in my sleep.  I have an awful time falling asleep most nights and when I finally do drift off I'm awake two hours later.  I feel like I never really get a good, deep sleep.  So hopefully after tomorrow's evaluation they'll set up an appointment for me to have a sleep over and find out what's going on.  I have a feeling I'll get one of those lovely CPAP contraptions.  Hey, if it works I'll be happy to use it.  I am tired of being tired all the time.
